State Representative Marc Anderson, a Republican from York, has been appointed to the Pennsylvania Public School Employees’ Retirement System (PSERS) Board. The appointment was made by the speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives following the resignation of former state Rep. Torren Ecker, who left after being elected as a judge in the 51st Judicial District.
Anderson brings experience as a former public school teacher to his new role. “As a former public school teacher, I understand how vital a secure retirement system is for educators and school employees,” said Anderson. “I’m honored to serve on the PSERS Board and will work hard to protect both the interests of our members and the taxpayers who support the system. My goal is to ensure PSERS remains strong, transparent and accountable for the benefit of all Pennsylvanians.”
The recommendation for Anderson’s appointment came from Rep. Jesse Topper, leader of the House Republican Caucus. Topper stated, “I have full faith that Rep. Anderson will serve with distinction on the board and will work diligently to protect taxpayers, as well as members of the system. Proper legislative oversight is key in ensuring the system continues to fulfill its financial obligations to its members and I believe Rep. Anderson will handle those duties well.”
The PSERS Board operates independently within Pennsylvania’s government structure and consists of 15 members who act as fiduciaries responsible for managing fund assets, including investment decisions and disbursements. Their responsibilities also include certifying contribution rates, overseeing actuarial valuations and audits, publishing annual financial statements, and reviewing activities carried out by senior staff.
PSERS was established in 1917 and began operating two years later with oversight over a defined benefit pension plan for public school employees statewide. In 2017, legislation expanded its mandate to include additional benefit options combining defined benefit and defined contribution components.
As of June 30, 2025, PSERS reported total net assets around $83.7 billion with approximately 262,000 active members, 255,000 annuitants or beneficiaries, and 26,000 vested inactive members.
