Rep. Lloyd Smucker, U.S. Congressman representing Pennsylvania’s 11th district since 2017, used his social media platform this week to criticize Senate Democrats for the ongoing government shutdown and highlight the impact on American families and small businesses.
On October 20, Smucker posted: “It’s been over a MONTH since House Republicans passed a clean CR to keep our government funded, troops paid, and Congress working for the American people. Since then, Democrats have voted 11 times to close the government, hurting real American families and workers. Republicans”.
Later that day, he continued: “It’s Day 20 of the Schumer Shutdown. Tonight, Senate Democrats have the opportunity to vote YES on the clean, House-passed CR and end this shutdown. It only takes 5 Senate Democrats to step up for the American people and reopen the government. The ball is in your court, Senate”.
On October 21, Smucker addressed concerns facing small businesses: “Small businesses—the nation’s largest employer—are facing hiring freezes, payroll shortages, and real concerns due to the Schumer Shutdown. On Monday, Senate Democrats voted ONCE AGAIN to keep the government closed. That’s a total of 11 votes against hardworking Americans.”
Lloyd Smucker has represented Pennsylvania’s 11th District in Congress since succeeding Joe Pitts in 2017 and previously served in the Pennsylvania Senate from 2009 to 2016. He was born in Lancaster County in 1964 and continues to reside there.
The ongoing dispute over funding measures has led to multiple votes and public statements from both parties regarding responsibility for keeping the government open and addressing economic challenges faced by constituents.
