Six WellSpan Health acute care hospitals have been recognized by Healthgrades for their clinical performance in a range of specialties, earning a total of 60 distinctions. Healthgrades is a national organization that evaluates hospital quality and provides resources for consumers seeking high-quality healthcare.
The awards span areas such as neurosciences, critical care, cardiac, pulmonary, and gastrointestinal services. A five-star distinction from Healthgrades indicates that a hospital has demonstrated strong outcomes in specific conditions or procedures.
Dr. Michael Seim, senior vice president and chief quality officer at WellSpan Health, stated: “This recognition reflects the exceptional teamwork and dedication across our complex areas of care and specialty care units. It demonstrates the expertise of our clinical teams, the strength of our systems and our unwavering focus on delivering high-quality, compassionate and personalized care to every patient, every time.”
Among the hospitals recognized:
– WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital received four recognitions in cardiac, vascular, and critical care.

Healthgrades reviews risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates for more than 30 common conditions and procedures at about 4,500 hospitals each year. Alana Biggers, MD, MPH, medical advisor at Healthgrades said: “Healthgrades’ specialty awards identify the nation’s top-performing hospitals in key service areas, helping consumers find high quality care tailored to their specific needs. We’re proud to recognize WellSpan Health for its consistently superior outcomes in key service areas, including Pulmonary Care, Critical Care, Stroke, and Neurosurgery.”
The analysis by Healthgrades indicated that if all hospitals performed at the level of five-star institutions during the study period from 2022 through 2024, approximately 230,466 lives could have been saved and around 156,797 complications avoided. These statistics are based on MedPAR data focused on Medicare patients over three years.
