In response to Governor Josh Shapiro's budget proposal for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, the York County House Republican Delegation has issued a statement expressing their concerns. The delegation consists of House Appropriations Chairman Seth Grove and Representatives Kate Klunk, Dawn Keefer, Wendy Fink, Mike Jones, and Joe D'Orsie.

According to the delegation, Governor Shapiro's budget proposal will have negative consequences for the future of the Commonwealth. They argue that it will lead to tax hikes in the next four years, which the residents of York County cannot afford. The delegation highlights the increasing cost of living, including fuel, groceries, and energy bills, as examples of the strain already felt by their constituents.

One particular point of contention is the proposed $1.53 billion mass transit overhaul, which includes significant increases for SEPTA. The delegation believes that their constituents should not be responsible for funding programs that will not benefit them directly.

The delegation also raises concerns about the overall spending in the budget proposal. They argue that the governor's plan includes over $2.5 billion for new or expanded government programs, without taking into account the need for fiscal responsibility. The delegation emphasizes the importance of living within means and not spending money that is not available or saved for leaner times.

The delegation further criticizes Governor Shapiro's budget proposal as a political move, aimed at setting him up for re-election in 2026 and a potential presidential run in 2028. They believe that the surplus should not be used for political gain, especially during a time of economic uncertainty.

As representatives of the people of Pennsylvania, the York County House Republican Delegation pledges to stand against what they see as an unaffordable, irresponsible, and misleading spending plan. They are committed to protecting taxpayers and ensuring the solvency of the Commonwealth. The delegation asserts that the people of Pennsylvania deserve a balanced budget that funds necessary programs, without funding unnecessary ones.

Fortunately, the delegation acknowledges that the governor's budget proposal is only the starting point of the state budget process. The House Appropriations Committee will soon begin budget hearings to assess Pennsylvania's financial standing. Through this process, the delegation aims to work together to craft a fair budget that respects taxpayers and prioritizes the core functions of government.

As the budget discussions continue, it will be crucial for all parties involved to find common ground and make decisions that will benefit the residents of Pennsylvania. The ultimate goal should be a budget that is fiscally responsible and addresses the needs of the state without burdening its taxpayers.
