Rep. Seth Grove of Dover has voiced his disapproval following Governor Josh Shapiro's decision to redirect $153 million from highway funding to Philadelphia's public transportation system, SEPTA. In a statement, Grove expressed concerns about the impact on Pennsylvania drivers, including those in York County.

"The unilateral decision by the governor to slash funding for Pennsylvania’s transportation needs by redirecting it to Philadelphia’s public transportation authority, SEPTA, harms drivers, including those in York County," said Grove. He emphasized that federal highway funding is intended for road and highway improvements rather than supporting public transport.

Grove highlighted potential consequences of this reallocation, stating that it could worsen the condition of roads and bridges due to delays in maintenance. "Shapiro’s order to direct money away from fixing roads will only exacerbate the problem of deteriorating roads and bridges by further delaying when they can be fixed," he stated. This shift means continued vehicle wear and tear for Pennsylvania drivers.

The representative noted that seven projects slated for 2025 funding will face delays as a result, including resurfacing work on Interstate 83 in York County. He also argued that local areas benefiting from mass transit should address their budget shortfalls independently: "Additionally, mass transit benefits local areas; and counties that use SEPTA should be tasked with filling the budget gap."

Grove pointed out what he sees as excessive state support for SEPTA: "State government already overfunds SEPTA."
