House Democrats faced criticism for leveraging the recent shooting at UPMC Memorial in York to advance legislation. The shooting left one police officer dead and injured six others, including health care providers. The legislation proposed by Democrats was said not to prevent such incidents, according to Republican Chairman Seth Grove of the House Labor and Industry Committee.
Grove condemned the Democrats' actions stating, “House Democrats played politics with a life-shattering incident that rocked our community. I wholeheartedly condemn their political stunt as they pushed out of the House Labor and Industry Committee."
In committee discussions, Grove questioned the bill's sponsor about its potential effectiveness in preventing the tragedy. He noted, “During debate in committee, I outright asked the bill’s sponsor what in the bill would have prevented such a tragedy. Aspects of the bill she cited are already in place at the facility, yet the incident still occurred."
Grove reiterated that the proposed legislation would not have averted the tragic event. He stated, “There is nothing in this legislation that would have prevented the tragic incident. What the bill does is create more paperwork and reporting requirements. I am more than a little upset that the tragedy is being used by House Democrats as a political tool to move legislation we know would not have impacted the incident.”
