WellSpan Health has published its 2025 Community Impact Report, highlighting its efforts to improve health outcomes and support the well-being of Central Pennsylvania residents. The report details the organization’s economic contribution, outreach programs, and ongoing investments in community health.

The health system, which is locally governed and among the largest employers in Pennsylvania, reported an economic impact of nearly $9 billion for fiscal year 2025. WellSpan supported more than 45,000 jobs directly and indirectly across the region.

“Every day, WellSpan’s 23,000 team members live our vision to be a trusted partner, to reimagine health care and to inspire health. To do that, we’re committed to removing barriers to good health and healthy living outside the walls of our hospitals and clinics,” said Roxanna Gapstur, Ph.D., R.N., president and CEO of WellSpan Health. “High quality health care should be simple, personal, affordable and accessible for everyone, and through our commitment to our local communities, we’re creating a healthier, more vibrant future for this beautiful region we’re privileged to call home.”

According to the report, WellSpan provided $364.7 million in community benefits during the fiscal year. This includes charity care for those in need as well as other outreach initiatives. The organization also paid $156 million in taxes at properties outside its hospitals.

Through its Community Grants Program and Summit Endowment, WellSpan distributed over $2.5 million to support 58 local initiatives focused on food security, access to care, and children’s health.

In addressing housing stability challenges across Central Pennsylvania, WellSpan made a three-year commitment totaling $3.5 million in support of 12 organizations working on innovative housing solutions.

Behavioral health was another area of focus in 2025; WellSpan delivered mental health services to 148,000 people by expanding crisis services access and updating inpatient behavioral units. The psychiatry residency program continues efforts to address provider shortages in the field.

The report also notes WellSpan’s partnership with the Plain Community—serving Amish and conservative Mennonite populations—which now reaches patients from 28 states and Canadian provinces through one of the nation’s most comprehensive Plain Community programs.

Looking ahead, three new hospitals are under construction with plans to open next year. These facilities are expected to change how healthcare is delivered throughout Central Pennsylvania.

Overall, WellSpan reinvests approximately $1 billion annually into local communities via outreach programs, charity care initiatives, and unreimbursed services as part of its broader mission to enhance patient lives throughout the region.
