WellSpan York Hospital has been named one of the top teaching hospitals in the United States by The Leapfrog Group, a national organization that monitors patient safety. Out of nearly 2,400 hospitals evaluated across the country, only 73 received this distinction.
“This recognition shines a spotlight on our dedication to training the next generation of health care professionals while maintaining the highest standards in patient safety and quality care,” said Dr. Michael Bohrn, vice president and chief academic officer at WellSpan Health. “I am proud to say that this achievement reflects the hard work and passion of our physicians, nurses, faculty and staff, as well as our ongoing investment in advancing medical education and research.”
The hospital offers a range of teaching programs such as residencies and fellowships in several specialties. These programs include practical clinical training and partnerships with local universities and medical schools. The hospital also focuses on keeping its educational offerings up-to-date with new technologies.
“Our teaching hospital status allows us to attract top talent and provide exceptional care to our community,” said Dr. Alyssa Moyer, vice president of WellSpan Health and president of WellSpan York Hospital. “We continue to strive for excellence in every aspect of health care delivery, education and research.”
In addition to its main teaching programs, WellSpan Health provides developmental opportunities related to behavioral health clinical psychology, clinical pastoral education, an administrative fellowship program centered around organizational needs, as well as other career development initiatives throughout its system.
Earlier this year, WellSpan Health signed an agreement with the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University to open a second regional campus in York County by 2027. This collaboration is expected to expand residency and fellowship options while increasing opportunities for research and clinical trials.
WellSpan’s partnership with Jersey College continues as part of its effort to train new nursing professionals. Through this affiliation with an accredited post-secondary institution focused on nursing education, students can complete an associate degree in nursing within two years; the first group is scheduled to graduate in 2026.
