HARRISBURG – Senator Mike Regan of Pennsylvania expressed his concerns about the state governor's budget proposal, particularly regarding excessive spending and cuts to school safety measures. In a statement issued after Governor Josh Shapiro delivered his annual budget address, Senator Regan criticized the governor's approach and highlighted the need to prioritize the protection of children.

Senator Regan stated, "The governor’s budget proposal reads as though he is living in a fantasyland, while we are living in the real world. We are dealing with a finite amount of taxpayer dollars. It is our responsibility to spend that limited money conservatively while ensuring all basic needs are covered. One of those basic needs is protecting our kids."

The senator expressed his dismay at the governor's decision to cut school safety and security spending by half, reducing it to $50 million. He pointed out the inconsistency in the governor's budget, stating, "There was no talk of him cutting his security budget – $15 million annually to the Pennsylvania State Police detail that surrounds him – yet he’s willing to cut the detail that protects the kids in school."

To address this issue, Senator Regan called on the House to pass Senate Bill 907, which would require armed security in every school district in Pennsylvania. He also urged the governor to sign the bill, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the safety of students.

"It’s important we focus on protecting our students, much like the governor protects himself and we protect ourselves in the Capitol building," Senator Regan stated.

Highlighting the urgency of the matter, Senator Regan shared a sobering statistic. Since the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012, over 200 fatal school shootings have occurred, resulting in the loss of nearly 400 individuals.

In conclusion, Senator Regan emphasized the need to prioritize the safety and well-being of students. He called for a rejection of the governor's proposed cuts to school safety funding and urged the implementation of armed security measures across all school districts in Pennsylvania.
