Rep. Wendy Fink from Red Lion, Pennsylvania, is preparing to reintroduce legislation aimed at reforming the state pension system for members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. The move comes as part of her ongoing commitment to fiscal responsibility.

The State Employees’ Retirement System (SERS) faces significant unfunded liabilities. Fink believes that a critical step in addressing this issue is to halt further financial strain. She has already set an example by opting not to collect a pension since she assumed office in 2023.

“Members of the House can take an important step toward fiscal responsibility and show leadership on this issue by making a change to the benefit options available to future members of our chamber,” stated Fink. “That’s why I plan to reintroduce legislation that will require freshman House members elected in 2024 and after to enroll in SERS’ defined contribution plan."

Fink clarified that her proposed changes would not affect current House members or those already enrolled in SERS but would standardize retirement benefits for future public servants and their constituents, similar to a typical 401K plan offered by many employers.

The SERS defined contribution plan allows employees to choose how their retirement funds are invested, with retirement savings dependent on contributions and investment performance.

Inquiries about this initiative or other state-related issues can be directed to Rep. Fink's office at 717-244-9232.
