Rep. Seth Grove of Dover expressed concern following Governor Josh Shapiro's recent move to redirect $153 million from Pennsylvania's highway funding to support public transportation in Philadelphia. Rep. Grove criticized the decision, underscoring its impact on drivers across the state, particularly in York County.
"The unilateral decision by the governor to slash funding for Pennsylvania’s transportation needs by redirecting it to Philadelphia’s public transportation authority, SEPTA, harms drivers, including those in York County," Grove stated. He emphasized that federal highway funds are intended for road and highway improvements and should not subsidize public transport.
Grove warned that Shapiro's decision could worsen the condition of the state's roads and bridges by delaying necessary repairs. "Shapiro’s order to direct money away from fixing roads will only exacerbate the problem of deteriorating roads and bridges by further delaying when they can be fixed," he said. Grove highlighted that Pennsylvania drivers might face more vehicle wear and tear due to road maintenance delays. Seven road projects slated for 2025, including the resurfacing of a section of Interstate 83 in York County, will face setbacks.
Additionally, Grove suggested that local areas benefiting from mass transit, like SEPTA, should address their budget shortfalls. He noted, "Counties that use SEPTA should be tasked with filling the budget gap. State government already overfunds SEPTA."
