Dover Area High School issued the following announcement.
Greetings Eagle Parents!
Dover’s school nurses are looking forward to seeing your children returning back to school! We are committed to helping them stay healthy and safe! As we return to school in the midst of a pandemic, the 2020/2021 school year will prove to be an interesting year filled with many achievements and firsts for our students, along with a few challenges that we will partner with you and your child to overcome.
First and most importantly, we ask that you please assess your child’s health each morning prior to sending them to school. Please keep them home if they are showing the slightest signs of illness (see attached flyer for guidelines in place from the PA Department of Health). If your child is taking any fever reducing medications (Tylenol, ibuprofen) keep him/her home 24 hours fever free without the use of fever reducing medications. We ask that you communicate any concerns you may have with your child’s health to your school nurse so that we can answer any questions and assist as needed. Secondly, if your child or a family member would be exposed to someone with COVID-19 or tests positive for COVID-19, please inform your child’s school nurse immediately. Depending on the circumstances, classmates or teachers may be required to quarantine if the PA Department of Health deems this to be appropriate.
Lastly, please understand that the school nurse will be assessing your child who visits the health room with health complaints during the day. We, the school nurses, are making decisions based on the CDC and PA Department of Health’s current recommendations. COVID-19 symptoms are vague and can be attributed to several other illnesses, but school nurses nationwide have been advised to err on the side of caution and send your child home for a minimum of ten days and possibly longer if deemed appropriate by the PA Department of Health guidelines.
***Please have current contact information on file to be reached during the school day and an alternative contact should the need arise. Symptoms requiring students to be sent home may include ONE of the following; fever >100.0, new cough, loss of taste, loss of smell, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing OR any TWO of the following; headache, sore throat, fatigue, congestion, runny nose, chills, muscle/body aches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. If the school nurse would see your child with any of the above complaints, she would need to isolate your child in a safe area in the health room with nurse supervision to limit exposure to other students and staff. Parents will be contacted immediately and will be advised to pick up your child. The expectation is that a parent or person appointed by the parent will arrive within the hour to pick up your child. **Your child will not be sent home on the bus if she/he has any of those symptoms. The school nurse will notify you on your child’s anticipated return to school date via letter and the criteria that must be met before their return.
As we know, recommendations from experts change frequently. Be aware that your school nurses are keeping up to date on new information as it comes out from the PA Department of Health to keep students and staff as safe as possible. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we navigate our way through this pandemic.
