In an effort to protect children from predators who abuse their positions of authority, Rep. Joe D’Orsie (R-Manchester) has introduced legislation to increase the penalties for corruption of a minor charges. The proposed bill, House Bill 1847, aims to enhance the charge from a first-degree misdemeanor to a felony of the third degree in cases where the accused is a police officer or school employee who holds a position of instructor or mentor to the abused child.

D’Orsie emphasized the importance of taking action to ensure the safety of children. He stated, "It’s imperative that we take steps to keep our children safe from predators who abuse their position to corrupt children." By increasing the penalty for this crime, D’Orsie hopes that it will serve as a deterrent and prevent future instances of abuse.

Under the current law, a first-degree misdemeanor carries a maximum sentence of five years. However, if House Bill 1847 is passed, the grading of the charge as a third-degree felony would result in a maximum penalty of seven years in prison. D’Orsie believes that this increase in prison time would not only provide longer sentences for offenders, but also send a clear message to potential perpetrators that such predatory behavior will not be tolerated in Pennsylvania.

Acknowledging the prevalence of individuals in positions of authority who exploit and prey on minors, D’Orsie explained, "Too often people with authority in our society who should serve as mentors and role models abuse their position to prey on minors." By raising the penalties for corruption of a minor charges, the legislation aims to not only protect children but also hold those in positions of authority accountable for their actions.

House Bill 1847 is currently being considered in the House Judiciary Committee. If passed, it would be a significant step in safeguarding the well-being of Pennsylvania's children.
