HARRISBURG – Grant funding has been bestowed upon Hanover Borough for the Consumptive Use Mitigation Projects grant program, as declared by Rep. Kate Klunk (R-Hanover). The $500,840 grant is designated for the repair of the damaged dam intake tower in Hanover, aiming to enhance public health and safety, mitigate water use conflicts, prevent water quality impacts, support economic production, and sustain ecological flows.
"These dollars for Hanover Borough will go a long way toward improving the water dam," emphasized Klunk. "This will allow the borough to quickly respond, improving public safety while enabling our municipal officials to better control water outflow during drought periods."
Klunk further expressed her satisfaction with the grant award, stating, "I was pleased to advocate for this award, which will also keep rates low for Hanover’s water consumers."
Consumptive use, as explained, refers to water utilized but not returned to rivers and streams due to evaporation, transpiration, incorporation into products, or other forms of loss. The grants are made possible by fees paid to the Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC) by regulated projects as mitigation for their consumptive water use. The SRBC is a federal/interstate governmental agency tasked with safeguarding and managing the water resources within the 27,500 square-mile Susquehanna River Basin.
Representative Kate A. Klunk from the 169th Legislative District of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives played a pivotal role in advocating for this grant award, which is poised to significantly benefit Hanover Borough and its residents.
