Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity and Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill have announced the return of over $205,000 in unclaimed property to residents of Southern York County. This follows an event at Sen. Phillips-Hill’s district office in Springfield Township, where constituents were able to identify money owed to them.
“Returning unclaimed property to its rightful owners is always great, but this was a truly outstanding event,” stated Treasurer Garrity. She highlighted that working with Sen. Phillips-Hill and her staff led to finding money for dozens of constituents, including one individual whose total exceeded $135,000.
Senator Phillips-Hill emphasized the importance of reclaiming unclaimed property amid rising prices: “At our recent event, we returned $205,215.30 to Southern York County residents, helping them access the hard-earned money that rightfully belongs to them.”
On October 10, residents visited Sen. Phillips-Hill’s district office where they received assistance from the Senator's staff and Treasury’s outreach team in their search for unclaimed property.
The identified unclaimed property includes funds turned over from banks, credit unions, insurance companies, healthcare organizations, retailers, among others. The Treasury is actively working on returning these funds to their rightful owners.
Unclaimed property can consist of dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, forgotten safe deposit boxes, and more. State law mandates businesses report such properties after three years of dormancy.
Treasury aims to return more than $4.5 billion in unclaimed property across Pennsylvania – with nearly $60 million owed specifically to York County residents. On average, claims are valued at about $1,600 and over ten percent of Pennsylvanians are due some form of unclaimed property.
