On December 11, 2024, Rep. Smucker emphasized the importance of using the debt-to-GDP ratio as a key metric for assessing the nation's fiscal health. He highlighted his legislative effort by introducing the Debt to GDP Transparency and Stabilization Act, which passed unanimously in the House Budget Committee. He noted that "David Walker is right. The metrics we use matter."
The following day, on December 12, 2024, he acknowledged former President Donald Trump’s impact on American history by congratulating him on being named TIME's Person of the Year. Smucker expressed that ".@realDonaldTrump is going to be one of the most consequential presidents in modern American history."
Later on December 12, Rep. Smucker addressed concerns about federal spending compared to revenue as a percentage of GDP over time. He questioned those who dismiss spending as an issue by pointing out that current spending stands at 24.2 percent of GDP compared to 18.2 percent in 1962 while revenue has remained steady at around 17 percent over the past five decades. His post stated "How can anyone say that spending is not the problem?"
