The legislation aims to address the ongoing issue of fentanyl-related overdoses by reclassifying certain substances and empowering law enforcement agencies.
On February 6, 2025, Rep. Smucker tweeted, "Today I voted in favor of the HALT Fentanyl Act. Here’s why, a ". He elaborated on the act's objectives in subsequent tweets.
In another tweet posted on the same day, he explained that "The HALT Fentanyl Act labels these fentanyl analogs as Schedule I substances and empowers law enforcement agencies to combat them and prevent additional loss of loved ones."
Rep. Smucker also highlighted local data by mentioning that "They’re the leading cause of overdose deaths in Lancaster County, according to the latest data from Joining Forces, a communitywide effort to combat the overdose epidemic."
