Grant funding has been awarded to Hanover Borough under the Consumptive Use Mitigation Projects grant program. This announcement was made by Representative Kate Klunk, who represents Hanover.

The borough is set to receive $500,840 in grant money. These funds are earmarked for repairing the damaged dam intake tower. The project aims to protect public health and safety, prevent water use conflicts, mitigate impacts on water quality, support economic activities, and sustain ecological flows.

Representative Klunk expressed her support for the initiative, stating: “These dollars for Hanover Borough will go a long way toward improving the water dam. This will allow the borough to quickly respond, improving public safety while enabling our municipal officials to better control water outflow during drought periods. I was pleased to advocate for this award, which will also keep rates low for Hanover’s water consumers.”

The concept of consumptive use involves water that is utilized but not returned to rivers and streams due to evaporation, transpiration, incorporation into products, or other forms of loss. The grants are funded by fees paid to the Susquehanna River Basin Commission through regulated projects as mitigation for their consumptive water use.

The Susquehanna River Basin Commission is a federal/interstate governmental agency tasked with managing and protecting the water resources within the 27,500 square-mile Susquehanna River Basin.
