House Democrats in Pennsylvania have voted to cut $150 million from the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) scholarships. This decision, made during a late session Rules Committee meeting, impacts educational opportunities for vulnerable students across the state.
Representative Wendy Fink, a Republican from Red Lion, expressed her concerns regarding this development. She stated, "EITC scholarships should not be a pawn in political chess matches. There are thousands of students across the Commonwealth who are trapped in failing schools, looking for ways to access better educational opportunities."
Fink criticized House Democrats for blocking funding intended for students attending the lowest-performing 15% of schools. She highlighted that Governor Josh Shapiro had campaigned in support of this scholarship program. "I am incredibly disappointed by the actions taken by my Democrat colleagues who once again kept the people’s elected voice voting late into the night," Fink remarked.
Emphasizing the importance of educational choice, Fink asserted that every student deserves access to quality education regardless of whether they attend public, charter, or parochial schools. She pledged continued advocacy for students and families seeking better educational options.
