Yesterday, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved a preliminary permit application for constructing a hydroelectric pump storage facility at Cuffs Run in Chanceford Township. This decision has drawn criticism from local representative Wendy Fink, who represents District 94, including the affected area.
Rep. Fink expressed her opposition to the project, stating, “I remain adamantly opposed to the proposed project at Cuffs Run.” She highlighted concerns that the development would impact hundreds of acres of farmland and forested lands and could displace long-term residents. "This project will jeopardize hundreds of acres of precious farmlands, a regional scenic trail, forested lands and essentially evict multi-generational residents from their homes to construct this facility," she said.
To oppose the proposal, Fink's office facilitated public comments from residents and collected over 100 petition signatures against the project. Despite these efforts, Fink expressed disappointment with FERC's decision. “It disappoints me that FERC prioritized its own plans over the concerns of my constituents,” she remarked.
Fink also pointed out that if the Cuffs Run project proceeds, it could negate more than $100 million invested in preserving the area's scenic qualities. She emphasized Cuffs Run's significance as an agricultural heritage site and its attraction for outdoor enthusiasts. “Cuffs Run is a prime example of the region’s rich agricultural heritage," she stated.
Despite her disappointment with FERC's approval, Rep. Fink remains committed to opposing the project alongside colleagues from York and Lancaster counties. "Our work is not done," she affirmed. "We will continue to fight."
