Many York City residents are suffering from Arthritis, a painful condition that not only affects quality of life but also has the potential of having dire health consequences. In fact, the CDC reports that 289,839 York residents have Arthritis. To help combat this issue, the YMCA of the Roses (formally the York YMCA), is hosting a walking and stretching program.
In partnership with the York City Bureau of Health, the YMCA of the Roses is implementing the Arthritis Foundation’s Walk with Ease program, a six-week evidence-based program that increases participants’ mobility and decreases pain from Arthritis. Studies by the Thurston Arthritis Research Center and the Institute on Aging of the University of North Carolina show that the program is proven to:
- Reduce the pain and discomfort of arthritis
- Increase balance, strength, and walking pace
- Build confidence in your ability to be physically active
- Improve overall health
The YMCA is currently looking to start sessions in York City and across York County and is free to all residents. If you or someone you know is interested in participating in this program, you can sign-up by contacting the YMCA Community Health Coordinator, Kyle Almoney, at 717-843-7884 x248 or visiting rosesymca.org to learn more information.
