Imagine negotiating a favorable deal on a used car at a dealership, only to have the terms abruptly changed. This scenario parallels the current state budget impasse in Pennsylvania, where actions by Governor Josh Shapiro have led to significant political tension.
Governor Shapiro recently announced his intention to veto funding for a scholarship program aimed at assisting students in underperforming school districts. This decision was unexpected, as he had previously expressed support for the program both during his campaign and as governor. In a late June interview with Fox News, Shapiro stated, “I’ve been very clear that I’m open to [school choice] … We’ve got to invest more in our children, not less. I want to make sure we give every child of God an opportunity to be successful. I think education is key to that.”
During budget negotiations, Gov. Shapiro maintained his backing of the measure. State Senate President Pro Tempore Kim Ward commented, “Senate Republicans worked in good faith with Gov. Shapiro for nearly two months making concessions and giving him all the goodies he wanted with his promise to work with his party and bring [the school choice program] across the finish line.”
The governor’s sudden change of heart has affected more than just students; it has also impacted trust among legislators necessary for effective governance. Trust is essential in any relationship, including political ones, where reliability and keeping one's word are crucial.
Gov. Shapiro's decision has left many wondering how trust can be restored after this breach. As noted by President John F. Kennedy: “I would rather be accused of breaking precedents than breaking promises.” Trust remains vital for achieving common goals for Pennsylvanians.
