Last week, WellSpan Health and the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University formalized an agreement to establish a second regional campus for Temple’s medical school in York, Pennsylvania. This follows a memorandum of understanding signed in the summer of 2024 to explore this opportunity.

The agreement aims to enhance the future supply of WellSpan physicians across central Pennsylvania and provide new learning opportunities for medical students. The first class is expected to commence in August 2027.

“We’re excited to collaborate with Temple University on this important effort to train the next generation of expert physicians and team members close to home,” said Dr. Anthony Aquilina, executive vice president and chief physician executive at WellSpan Health. He added that the program would benefit patients and complement other educational initiatives addressing the nationwide shortage of healthcare professionals.

Temple President John Fry expressed enthusiasm about partnering with WellSpan, stating, “This is a tremendous opportunity for Temple to partner with a renowned healthcare provider to help educate a new group of medical professionals who are committed to making a difference through their care, research and education.” He emphasized that the new campus would improve health outcomes in York County and across Pennsylvania.

The new campus will join Temple’s existing facilities, which currently enroll 880 medical students at its main Health Sciences Center campus in North Philadelphia and St. Luke’s University Health Network campus in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Amy J. Goldberg, The Marjorie Katz Dean of the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, highlighted the significance of this affiliation: “This affiliation marks an exciting step forward in broadening medical education opportunities for students while strengthening the physician pipeline for Pennsylvania.”

WellSpan has also expanded residency programs and launched a new school of nursing in York through an affiliation with Jersey College last year.

Details are still being finalized, but an event is planned for later this spring to celebrate the addition of the medical school campus in York.
