WellSpan Health has been recognized with two awards by the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) for its achievements in healthcare innovation and operational excellence. The HAP Achievement Awards honor institutions excelling in advancing patient care and creativity. This year, WellSpan was awarded for its use of artificial intelligence and its efforts to improve hospital throughput.
The Workforce Innovators Award was given to WellSpan for its strategic use of artificial intelligence to enhance healthcare delivery. "Our team's industry-leading use of AI is transforming the way we provide care," stated Mark Kandrysawtz, senior vice president and chief innovation officer, WellSpan Health. He emphasized the focus on improving experiences for both patients and team members, thus benefiting the organization's overall performance.
WellSpan has instituted a comprehensive strategy for AI integration across its operations, enhancing patient outcomes and operational efficiency while addressing staffing challenges. This approach covers key areas such as nursing care, diagnostic imaging, and patient engagement.
In addition, WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital was recognized with the Optimal Operations Award for improving patient flow and care in Lebanon County. Dr. Michael Seim, senior vice president and chief quality officer at WellSpan Health, expressed pride in the hospital team for enhancing patient experiences. "This award is a testament to our team members’ hard work and commitment to providing the highest quality care for our patients," Seim said.
The hospital's initiative aims to reduce patient length of stay and improve throughput, particularly in the emergency department, by addressing delays and discharge inefficiencies. The project focused on process improvements and expediting discharges, leading to significant progress in patient flow, safety, and satisfaction.
