Adam Roberts, a resident of Bloomsburg, recently underwent surgery to alleviate arthritis in his big toe, a condition that originated from a sports injury during his junior high school wrestling days. The surgery was performed by Dr. Gerard Cush, a foot and ankle surgeon at WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital.
Roberts expressed immense gratitude for the improved mobility and reduced pain following the procedure. In appreciation, he ordered a cake shaped like a right foot—the one operated on—from a specialty bakery. The cake's realistic design included skin-colored icing and detailed features resembling Roberts' foot before surgery. Inscribed next to the cake were the words: "Put your best foot forward."
During a post-surgery appointment, Roberts surprised Dr. Cush with the unique cake, leaving him momentarily speechless until he realized what it was all about. Surrounded by team members Grace Bollinger and Amy Wolfe, Dr. Cush made the first cut on the cake at the same spot where he had performed Roberts' surgery.
Reflecting on his journey, Roberts said, “I recently lost a bunch of weight. I have made some lifestyle changes...This was the perfect way to celebrate that and...put my best foot forward.” He added that this gesture was meant to show gratitude and mark his path toward health and wellness.
Dr. Cush was touched by this act of appreciation, stating, “To have somebody appreciate you by doing something like [this] makes a world of difference.” He emphasized the importance of patient relationships in his practice: “They are trusting you to help them...Helping my patients back to their lifestyle...We want them to do their absolute best too.”
