State Representative Seth Grove (R-York) and members of the Stambaugh family will host a ceremony to designate the bridge carrying U.S. Route 30 over Paradise Creek between Paradise Township and Jackson Township, York County, as the Private Edward J. Stambaugh Memorial Bridge.

The event is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 20, at 9:30 a.m., at Paradise Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at 3241 Church Road, Thomasville, PA 17364.

Barring any technical difficulties, the press conference will be livestreamed.

Private Edward J. Stambaugh enlisted in the U.S. Army on Sept. 8, 1942. He served with valor as a member of M-Company, 116th Regiment during World War II. M-Company participated in the Normandy invasion on D-Day and continued through France securing towns for Allied troops. On June 16, 1944, while advancing toward St. Lo, France, Stambaugh was killed in action under heavy enemy fire.

Stambaugh was initially buried on June 23, 1944, at La Cambe Cemetery near Omaha Beach. His remains were returned to the United States on Jan. 20, 1948 and he was laid to rest on Feb. 19 of that year at Paradise Holtzschwamm Lutheran Church Cemetery in Thomasville, York County. He was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart medal.
