Schools in Pennsylvania have become a focal point in discussions about security measures, as recent statistics highlight an increase in school shootings. According to Senator Mike Regan of Pennsylvania's 31st District, only half of the state's schools currently have security personnel on-site.

Senator Regan has been advocating for legislation that would require armed officers in every school building for the past decade. He recalls being deeply affected by the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012 and believes his experience as a former U.S. Marshal could contribute to enhancing school safety.

Since the Sandy Hook incident, there have been over 200 fatal shootings at K-12 schools nationwide. In 2023 alone, there have been 47 deaths and 151 injuries from such incidents. Recent events indicate that attackers often target schools with less stringent security measures.

In response, Senator Regan has reintroduced legislation to mandate armed security personnel in all publicly funded schools in Pennsylvania. Despite available funding since 1999 and additional financial support through the School Safety and Security Fund grant program, approximately half of Pennsylvania's school districts still lack security staff.

The proposal faces opposition due to concerns about costs and the appropriateness of arming school personnel. However, current regulations require rigorous training for armed staff, including Act 235 lethal weapons training and courses from the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO).

Senator Regan argues that ensuring student safety should be prioritized over other expenditures. He emphasizes the need for immediate action to protect students so educators can focus on teaching without concerns about safety threats.

Senator Mike Regan represents Cumberland and York counties and serves as Chairman of the Senate Law and Justice Committee. His background includes serving with the U.S. Marshals Service from 1988 to 2011.
