State Representative Kate Klunk has expressed her concerns over Governor Josh Shapiro's budget proposal for the 2025-26 fiscal year. In a statement, Rep. Klunk described the proposed $51.47 billion budget as "unsustainable and frivolous," noting that it represents a 7.5% increase over the current year's spending.

Rep. Klunk criticized the plan to balance the budget by depleting the state's $2.89 billion General Fund surplus and transferring an additional $1.6 billion from the Rainy Day Fund, calling this approach "irresponsible" and a misuse of reserve funds.

The governor's proposal includes new energy taxes under initiatives like the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) and the Pennsylvania Climate Emissions Reduction Act (PACER). Rep. Klunk argued that these taxes would be economically damaging, stating, "Pennsylvania families and small businesses simply cannot afford to pay more for energy."

She emphasized that House Republicans will continue to support energy diversification as a means to generate revenue and reduce energy costs while creating jobs in Pennsylvania. "I look forward to advocating for a responsible budget plan that conserves the state’s reserve funds and unlocks our energy potential in the coming months," she said.

Rep. Klunk is optimistic about working towards sustainable solutions before the budget deadline on June 30.
